Panel Discussion: Next Generation Asian American Comedians 5/13/2010
In the last few decades, Asian Americans have steadily been gaining ground throughout the entertainment industry—as evidenced by comedians like Margaret Cho and Dat Phan, who have become household names. But has this mainstream exposure changed the perceptions and interpretations of Asian Americans in stand-up comedy? How do comics play off or subvert audience expectations and the stereotypes established in the media–from Fu Manchu to Long Duck Dong? And how do these stereotypes, and comics personal identities, shape their material, performances, and careers? This panel discussion will address these issues from a variety of perspectives with both established and up-and-coming comedians.
Presented as part of APICC’s United States of Asian American Festival. Speakers include comedian Edwin Li, Tina Kim, Samson Koletkar, and Darby Price
